This\nis a particular issue with custom-built solutions like Magento, where every\ntime you want or need new functionality you have to pay for it. E-commerce is\nconstantly evolving, and by the time you have finished getting the\nfunctionality built and paid for, it could already be out-of-date. Then the vicious cycle continues and you already\nneed to begin looking for an upgraded version, which is far from ideal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><strong>Technical<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many technical reasons as well. A lot of websites suffer\nfrom a lack of ERP\/ePos integration, and this is very important for scaling an e-commerce website as you want to ensure\nstock levels and pricing are fully kept up-to-date and that orders\nautomatically download into the ePos\/ERP. When done well, you can have the\nconfidence to sell high volumes meanwhile also reducing the manual labour load.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another technical reason relates to the instability\nsome e-commerce businesses face during peak traffic periods. This is\nquite a common scenario, where a website normally does just fine but then slows\ndown significantly during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fact-finder.com\/blog\/fact-report-black-friday-2019\/\">Black Friday<\/a> and other peak traffic\ndays. Retailers now expect that their web agencies are going to come to\nthem with recommendations on functionality &#8211; not the other way around.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Okay, so there&#8217;s definitely a lot involved with making such a big decision. Let&#8217;s say a retailer has made the leap and has decided to replatform their e-commerce site. What are the different options or routes available to them?<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Paul: <\/em>In general, your options would be to go\nwith custom built, off-the-shelf or just upgrading your current e-commerce\nplatform. Of course, there&#8217;s a lot to consider before choosing which way to go\n&#8211; there&#8217;s no right way for every e-commerce business. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Custom-built<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With\na custom-built solution, the end result tends to be more expensive. You are\nresponsible for the functionality which means you have total control.\nUnfortunately, changes can take time, are costly and may not always be in line\nwith current e-commerce trends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Off-the-shelf<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With\nan off-the-shelf solution, like <strong>ab<\/strong>commerce,\nyou will have less flexibility and control than with custom-built, but you will\nhave access to functionality that is current with e-commerce trends. The costs\nwill also be significantly less and functionality will be implemented quicker,\nincluding with 3rd-party integrations like FACT-Finder that the agency has a\nrelationship with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Upgrade<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\nmay also be an option to upgrade your current platform, but you should only do\nso if you are confident that your current provider can solve the issues that\nmade you consider e-commerce replatforming in the first place. If this is the case for you, then staying with your current\nprovider may be the best option. You\nshould really cover all of your bases and ask all of the right questions before\nmaking your final decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Strategic Considerations<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From a strategic\nperspective, you need to look at the model they are suggesting. Are they\ntalking cloud, or custom development? You need to find out what their roadmap\nis for the future and also make sure that you can have a good working\nrelationship with this partner for the next 5 years or so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Integration Considerations<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s also important here to check which 3rd-party integrations an e-commerce replatforming partner is involved with already because that makes it easier to switch on important functionality like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fact-finder.com\/products\/site-search.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">optimised search and navigation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Functionality Considerations<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From a functional\nperspective, you need to make sure that all the essential functionality you\ncurrently have is included in their platform and, if there&#8217;s new functionality,\nthat it could easily be added to your platform as well. You shouldn&#8217;t just turn\non new functionality straight away and maybe unnecessarily clutter your\nwebsite. You must make sure that each added piece will have an improvement on\nyour traffic, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fact-finder.com\/blog\/conversion-rates-rise-and-bounce-rates-drop-best-practice-globus\/\">conversion\nrate<\/a>, site speed, site stability or even your mobile experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Support Considerations<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And lastly, you\nwould need to look at the data migration services offered to make sure that\nthere&#8217;s enough assistance and support there to help you migrate to the new\ne-commerce platform seamlessly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Many businesses have e-commerce tools integrated into their shop to improve the customer journey. Is it difficult to transfer their existing tools to the new platform?<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Paul: <\/em>It can be, it depends. If you&#8217;re going\ncustom-built it can be quite difficult to bring them across and you would have\nto custom build each integration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For an off-the-shelf\nplatform, you might be able to switch on an integration. For example, <strong>ab<\/strong>commerce is an off-the-shelf platform and it\nhas a very good integration with FACT-Finder. Because of this, you can just\nswitch that on and there&#8217;s no extra integration required. We have\nall heard the nightmare stories of e-commerce replatforming projects taking\nyears to complete. Our advice would be to go with an off-the-shelf platform\nwhenever possible as this will dramatically reduce the risk of project blowout.\nWith this route, the project shouldn\u2019t take longer than 2 to 4 months to\ncomplete when done correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Failure<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A second fear is\nthat the project may not be seen as a success post-implementation because\ne-commerce replatforming projects can use a lot of resources, both financially\nand by taking employees away from their usual responsibilities. To avoid this,\nyou need to be very clear what the goals of the project are from the beginning\nand make sure that these goals are communicated to all stakeholders. It may not\nalways be about immediately increasing sales but rather improving internal\nprocesses or reducing costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We would also advise\nyou to be careful about timing when you conduct a migration of your e-commerce\nplatform &#8211; you don\u2019t want to migrate during your peak selling time, so plan\nahead so that the migration happens at the best time for you and your business.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, ensure you\nhave a robust go-live plan that allows for proper testing and that all the\nrequired support is in place. For example, ensure you have the correct person\nlined up to update the DNS settings and don\u2019t leave it to the last minute. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Dip in SEO<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is always a\nfear that your SEO will suffer as a result of e-commerce replatforming. This\ndoes not need to be the case if you manage it correctly, however, and the\nreplatforming could actually end up having a positive impact on your SEO. One\nhelpful bit of advice &#8211; make sure that you are using 301 redirects properly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Limited Resources<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many businesses also\nfear the impact e-commerce replatforming will have on their web team. A\nmigration can \u201cpause\u201d your web team for a few months and take them away from\nonline sales. To minimize this, carefully plan your project and bring in\ntemporary resources to do the migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Catalogue Migration<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A big obstacle in\ne-commerce replatforming is migrating your catalogue. When choosing your new\nplatform, make sure that you can either export your catalogue or better still\nthat you are integrated with your ePOS\/ERP. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Wrapping it up<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>E-commerce\nreplatforming can be daunting &#8211; but it&#8217;s certainly do-able if you go into it\nprepared and with agreed-upon goals.
